Deacons, wives learn about Archdiocese's plans for future

Tim Weiske, of the Planning and Development Department, on Feb. 6 outlined the plans the Archdiocese is formulating as it looks to a future with fewer priests and pastors. Nearly 150 deacons and wives gathered at St. Bernardine School to hear the presentation.

Deadline nears for Jubilee for Deacons trip

The deposit deadline for the Rome trip to celebrate the Jubilee for Deacons is February 12.

The Office of the Diaconate in conjunction with Aviatours is hosting the pilgrimage to Rome May 26-31. Deacons, wives, family and friends are invited to join us. The cost is $2,588. This includes airfare, hotel, most meals, taxes and tips.

An extension to Florence, Assisi and Venice costs an additional $851.

Day of Reflection: A Call for Social Justice and Social Action

All deacons and wives are invited to a Day of Reflection: A Call for Social Justice and Social Action from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, February 20, at St. Agatha Church, 3151 W. Douglas Blvd., Chicago.

The day is sponsored by the Black Deacons of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Familes and friends are all invited to attend.

 

Special award for Hope's on the Way

 

Deacon Joe Winblad, chairman of the Hope's on the Way board, far right, shows off a plaque the group received for its remodeling of the kitchen and dining areas of Zacchaeus House. On hand for the presentation at the Zacchaeus House benefit Dec. 5 were Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Perry, along with Deacon Dan Troy, Don Krengiel, Deacon John Vidmar and Deacon Dave Brencic who all assisted in the various phases of the remodeling project.

 

List of Spiritual Directors

The Office of the Diaconate has compiled a list of Spiritual Directors who are willing to meet with deacons and wives of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

When meeting with the Spiritual Director make sure to ask what the stipend for their service will be.

St. Stephen Symposium 2015

 

Fr. Albert Haase, OFM, left, addressed more than 250 deacons and wives at the St. Stephen Symposium 2015 held Nov. 14, at Divine Providence in Westchester. Fr. Albert spoke on "The Spiritual LIfe as a Journey of Transformation." Deacons and wives across the archdiocese, below, enjoy lunch during the Symposium.

Exploring the Diaconate

Exploring the Diaconate sessions are being planned for men who are discerning a call to the Diaconate.

The dates and locations are:

March 3, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.: USML/Building 201P

March 31, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. USML/Building 201P

April 7, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.: St. Aloysius, Parish Center Gonzaga Room.

Application deadline for the 2016-2017 Aspirancy Path is May 1, 2016.

The Executive Committee of the Diaconate Council consists of Deacons Chuck McFarland, vice chairman, left; Dennis Robak, treasurer; George Kashmar, chairman; Bill Stearns, immediate past chairman; and John Gaughan, secretary. Also serving on the committee are Deacon Richard Hudzik, Vicar for Deacons; Fr. Michael Ahlstrom, Vicar Emeritus; and Deacon Dave Brencic, associate director.

Death of Eleanor Pionek

Eleanor Piontek, wife of Deacon Richard Pionek, class of 1986, died February 2, 2016. Richard is a Chicago deacon who has been working in the Milwaukee Archdiocese.

There will be Chicago area visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, at the Modell Funeral Home, 12641 W. 143rd St., Homer Glen.  A prayer service will be  held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 11, at the funeral home followed by a graveside service.

May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
