Diaconate Skills Survey

The Diaconate Office is inviting all deacons and wives to complete the skills survey.
We want to gather data about our levels of education, our job skills, our professional certificates and licenses, as well as information about who speaks which languages. Further, a key component is to ask what ministries deacons and wives are engaged in.

The information will be used for several purposes:
• We will find out who might be approached for or interested in various ministries.
• We will find out who might be able to serve the Church with a particular skill set as Renew My Church continues.
• We will find our in what areas most of us are doing our ministry and thereby be better informed about where we might focus ongoing formation initiatives.
• We might be able to create "A Diaconate Yellow Pages" for those who are interested in listing their businesses.

The link--for both men and women--is the following: http://www.smhg60.com/Vicar/

Enter your data, men and women. As the project unfolds and the data comes in, we will give you reports on gross numbers. That is, we will keep your individual data private but will want to announce to the community numbers such as how many of us are engaged in this ministry or that, how many of us speak this or that language, how many have degrees, licenses or other credentials.

Diaconate Convocation 2017

"Were Not Our Hearts Burning Within Us," is the theme for this year's Diaconate Convocation 2017 June 9-11, 2017 at the Chicago Marriott Oak Brook.

To feed and stoke that fire within us, we have invited two very gifted speakers for our keynotes and have arranged for a variety of workshop presentations on evangelization, Scripture and homiletics. Part of this packet is a full description of the workshops.

Saturday morning’s keynote is Our Restless Heart: Embracing our joyful journey to God,” by Father Tom McCarthy, O.S.A. Father Tom is an experienced preacher, teacher, administrator, and retreat director. He ministered at St. Rita of Cascia High School in Chicago for 21 years and is currently vocations director for the Midwest and Eastern Provinces for the Augustinian Order. Father Tom notes St. Augustine’s famous line, “…our hearts are restless, Lord, until they rest in thee.” Father Tom asks how we might proclaim the Gospel with joy knowing that everyone seeks to rest in the Lord.

Father Dennis McManus will be our Sunday keynote speaker. He is a priest of the Archdiocese of Mobile and a professor of liturgy at St. John the Evangelist Seminary in Boston, as well as serving as a professor at Georgetown University in the Department of Jewish Studies. Fr. McManus served for nine years as Associate Director in the Secretariat for the Liturgy at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington, D.C., and in 2010 Pope Benedict XVI named him as Consultor to the Congregation for Divine Worship and Peritus for the same Congregation’s commission on liturgical translation. Father Dennis will retrace for us the advice of Pope Francis to begin preaching and teaching by observing the preacher/teacher’s internal conversation with God—how are God and I “getting along?” and how can I use that as a starting point in the ministry of the Word?

Our Convocation will enjoy a Saturday evening banquet when the annual Ministry Award winners will be announced. The Convocation will conclude Sunday morning with Mass celebrated by Cardinal Blase Cupich.

    Cost and registration:

Friday night, June 9, is optional and there will be an abbreviated schedule of early registration, a Taize evening prayer and a cash bar social. You must sign up for the social separately. The cost for Friday is $20 per person. Please indicate on the registration form if you are attending the Friday evening social.

The cost of 2017 Convocation is $85 per person for early bird registration through May 19. After May 19 to June 1 (when registration closes), registration will be $100 per person. The fee for the Convocation does not include the cost of the hotel room.

To register for the Convocation and the workshops, fill out the attached form and mail it with your check to the Office of the Diaconate, 816 Marengo Ave., Forest Park, IL 60130. Make your check payable to the Office of the Diaconate.

Paying online: Payment also can be made at GiveCentral -- https://www.givecentral.org/gchome. Go to the Donate tab and search for Office of the Diaconate. Clicking on the Diaconate symbol will take you to a page with options for paying for the Convocation and the Friday social. Enter the amount, choose one-time payment and Add to Gift Basket and then check out. From there, follow the prompts for credit card information and payment. If you do not have a GiveCentral account, choose “Give as a Guest.” If your payment is made electronically, you must still mail in your workshop selections.

Hotel information: We have been able to secure a room rate of $89 plus taxes at both the Chicago Marriott Oak Brook and the Courtyard by Marriott (just five minutes down the road). Details on how to get your hotel room are in this package on the sheet marked “Accommodations.” There are only a limited number of rooms reserved, so reserve now.

Deadlines: Reserving a hotel room -- May 19. Convocation registration closes -- June 1.

We are still in need of volunteers to make the Convocation a success. There is also a special need for musicians, cantors and singers.

If you are willing to help out, please call Deacon Dave Brencic at the Office of the Diaconate, (708) 366-8900.
