Outstanding Diaconal Ministry Nominations

Nominations of deacons and their wives who are doing outstanding ministerial service in their parishes or the community are now being accepted.

This is your opportunity to recognize the service and work of a deacon, wife or Diaconate couple. These nominations should be only with respect to the unpaid ministry of deacons and wives.   

The award categories include:

-- St. Philip the Deacon Award for exemplary witness in the field of evangelization

-- St. Lawrence the Deacon Award for ministry to the “treasures of the Church” – the poor and needy

-- St. Priscilla Award for a deacon’s wife’s service to the Church and the Diaconate

-- Shared Ministry Award for ministry as a couple, where the deacon and wife work collaboratively.

All nominations must be returned by April 30 to the Diaconate Office, 816 Marengo, Forest Park, IL 60130. Nominations also can be faxed to (708) 366-8968.

 Recognition of this outstanding service to the Church and her people is given at our annual Convocation, which will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2015, at St. John Brebeuf Parish in Niles.

Shrine of Christ's Passion tour

 

 Join us for a day-long pilgrimage to the Shrine of Christ's Passion in St. John, Ind., on Sunday, May 3. Deacons, wives and families are invited to join us.

A charter bus will leave from the St. Bernadine Church parking lot at 11:30 a.m. and will return by 5:30 p.m. The bus, which will have a bathroom, seats 55. Cost is $10 per person and includes lunch.

Deadline to register is Monday, April 27.

Archbishop to be Convocation keynote

   Archbishop Blase Cupich will be the keynote speaker
at the 2015 Convocation on Saturday, June 13,
at St. John Brebeuf Parish in Niles. Deacons and wives 
make sure to mark your calendars.

Inviting candidates to the Diaconate

Have you invited any men in your parish to consider the Diaconate? Have you encouraged your pastor to seek out potential candidates? There is still time.

May 1 is the deadline for submission of applications to the Institute for Diaconal Studies' Aspirancy Path, which begins August 2015.

Applicants must be 31 to 62 years of age at the time of application.

Upcoming liturgy classes

     Father Matthew Compton will be offering a series of classes on the liturgy and homiletics to the Diaconate Community in 2015y. These classes will be an extension of the Emmaus Program for the newly ordained.

    The classes for the Diaconate Commuity at large will be held at 5 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month at the Diaconate Office in Forest Park. To sign up for a class, call the Diaconate Office at (708) 366-8900

  • May 5: Homiletics II -- theory and practice, led by Fr. Michael Ahlstrom.

  • June 2: Benediction and other rites

The Executive Committee of the Diaconate Council consists of Deacons Chuck McFarland, vice chairman, left; Dennis Robak, treasurer; George Kashmar, chairman; Bill Stearns, immediate past chairman; and John Gaughan, secretary. Also serving on the committee are Deacon Richard Hudzik, Vicar for Deacons; Fr. Michael Ahlstrom, Vicar Emeritus; and Deacon Dave Brencic, associate director.

Death of Deacon Ray Deabel

We are saddened to report the death of Deacon Ray Deabel, class of 1979. Deacon Deabel, 70, died Monday, April 6, 2015.

The wake will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 17, at Smits Funeral Home, 2121 Pleasant Spring Lane, Dyer, Ind.

There also will be visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday,  April 18, at St. Kiernan Church, 724 195th St., Chicago Heights. The funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. at St. Kiernan.

Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Steger, Ill.

May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.

 

Death of Deacon Steven Moore

We are saddened to report the death of Deacon Steven Moore, class of 1994. Deacon Moore, 79, formerly served at St. Anne Parish in Hazel Crest.

A memorial service will be planned for a future date.

Notes of condolence may be sent to Deacon Moore's wife, Millie, at 2737 Tennyson Place, Hazel Crest, IL 60429.
