DEATH ANNOUNCEMENTS


We are saddened to announce the death of retired Deacon Frank DeVita, class of 1974. Deacon DeVita died on July 10, 2019. He was 97.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 14, at Conboy Funeral Home, 10501 W. Cermak Rd., Westchester.  The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 15, at Divine Providence Church, 2550 S. Mayfair Avenue, Westchester. Deacons are invited to vest in alb and white archdiocesan stole and be seated as an order. 

Please keep the DeVita family in your prayers. May Deacon DeVita’s soul and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.

We are saddened to announce the death of Deacon Mario Avila, Class of 1992. Deacon Mario died July 10, 2019.  

Visitation will be from 3 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, July 16, at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 7750 Cermak Road, Forest Park, Illinois. The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, July 17, at St. Malachy+ Precious Blood Church, 2248 W. Washington Boulevard, Chicago, Illinois. 

Deacons are invited to attend vested in alb and white Archdiocese of Chicago stole and be seated as an order.

May Deacon Mario's soul and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace. Please keep Mario's wife, Juanita, and the entire Avila family in your prayers.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
 

More than 270 deacons and wives gathered at the 2019 Diaconate Convocation on June 1. Bishop Mark Bartosic, episcopal vicar for Vicariate II, was the keynote presenter.

The theme of the Convocation was “Lord, Teach Us to Pray” and 16 different workshops were offered ranging from Franciscan and Carmelite spirituality to spiritual direction to the Eucharist.

The annual ministry awards were presented after lunch. Outstanding ministry in evangelization, service to the poor, shared ministry by a couple, and ministry by a wife or widow were recognized.

Deacon Freddy Palacios received this year’s St. Stephen the Deacon Award for outstanding ministry for his work with young people in Guatemala. Deacon Tim Sullivan won the St. Lawrence Award for his work with the poor; Deacon Jose Estrada received the St. Philip Award for Evangelization; Deacon Manuel and Luz Salgado received the Couple Ministry Award; and Marlene Heyes won the St. Priscilla Award for outstanding ministry by a woman.
